Saint Denis

First Bishop of Paris and Martyr of the Third Century

Saint Denis (Dionysius) was a 3rd-century bishop and the Apostle of France sent from Rome to convert the pagan Gauls. Settling on an island in the Seine near Lutetia (modern Paris), Denis established a flourishing Christian community, built a church, and consecrated priests. His apostolic success aroused the fierce hostility of the pagan priests and Roman governor. Denis was arrested alongside his companions, Priest Rusticus and Deacon Eleutherius, and after severe tortures, all three were beheaded on the highest hill of Paris (Montmartre, the "Mountain of Martyrs"). Pious tradition records that Saint Denis picked up his severed head and walked several miles while preaching a sermon on repentance and faith, coming to rest at the site of the royal Abbey of Saint-Denis.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Founder of the Jesuits and Author of Spiritual Exercises

Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) was a Spanish Basque knight, mystic, and founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Wounded by a cannonball in his leg at the Siege of Pamplona in 1521, Ignatius read the Life of Christ and Lives of the Saints during his convalescence, undergoing a profound spiritual awakening. Laying down his sword before Our Lady of Montserrat and spending a year of solitary penance in a cave at Manresa, Ignatius composed the Spiritual Exercises—a transformative manual of spiritual discernment and meditation. He later studied theology at the University of Paris, gathering six companions including Saint Francis Xavier. In 1540, Pope Paul III approved the Society of Jesus under Ignatius's leadership, which spearheaded Catholic educational, theological, and missionary renewal throughout the Counter-Reformation under the motto: "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" ("For the Greater Glory of God").

Saint Januarius

Bishop of Benevento, Martyr, and Patron of Naples

Saint Januarius (San Gennaro) (d. c. 305 A.D.) was the Bishop of Benevento, Italy, who suffered martyrdom during the brutal Diocletianic Persecution. When his friend Deacon Sosius was arrested for his Christian faith, Januarius visited him in prison, openly professing Christ and accepting arrest. After surviving thrown to wild beasts in the amphitheatre of Puteoli (when the animals refused to harm the confessors), Januarius and his companions were beheaded at Solfatara. A pious woman named Eusebia collected Januarius's sacred blood in vials. For centuries in Naples Cathedral, the dried blood of Saint Januarius has liquefied predictably multiple times each year before crowds of pilgrims—a famous standing miracle of divine intercession.

Saint Michael the Archangel

Archangel, Defender of the Church, and Commander of the Heavenly Host

Saint Michael the Archangel is the Chief Prince of the Heavenly Host and defender of God’s people. His sacred name in Hebrew signifies "Who is like unto God?"—the battle cry with which he led the faithful angels in casting Satan and the rebellious spirits out of Heaven. In Sacred Scripture (Daniel, Revelation, Epistle of Jude), Saint Michael appears as the protector of Israel, the defender of the Church against the dragon, the presenter of souls before the divine judgment seat, and the champion in spiritual warfare. Traditional Catholic devotion honors Saint Michael through the Prayer of Pope Leo XIII, invoking his potent celestial intercession against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
