Saint Robert Bellarmine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Saint Robert Bellarmine (1542–1621) was an Italian Jesuit friar, Cardinal, Archbishop of Capua, and Doctor of the Church. Revered as the intellectual defender of the Catholic Church during the Counter-Reformation, Bellarmine served as Professor of Theology at the Roman College. His magnum opus, Disputationes de Controversiis Christianae Fidei, provided a comprehensive defense of Catholic doctrine against Protestant objections, relying on Scripture, Church Fathers, and conciliar decrees. Bellarmine also produced a simplified Catechism used throughout the world for centuries. As a Cardinal and advisor to Popes, Bellarmine was noted for his personal austerity, giving his cardinalatial revenues to the poor, and expressing his saintly humility by declaring: "The soul is worth more than all the kingdoms of the world."
